The project consisted of construction of 27,900 feet of 13-foot-diameter sewer tunnel utilizing three tunnel boring machines at a tunnel depth of approximately 160 feet. Three work shafts/diversion structures were constructed along with seven 14-foot-diameter maintenance shafts. The tunnel alignment ran through a densely populated area of downtown Los Angeles and passed under three major freeways.
Aaron Calderon of DC Engineering group served as the lead traffic management coordinator for the project. Working closely with the city of Los Angeles Department of Transportation, traffic management strategies were prepared to minimize construction impacts to vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle travel. Worksite traffic control and temporary traffic signal plans were prepared to provide a safe work zone for the contractor while also maintaining safe travel
